The aim of this curricula review was to assess whether recommendations developed within the EU and Council of Europe joint project “Quality Education for All” are incorporated in the History and Geography curricula.
The subject of analysis were Geography and History curricula documents for primary schools and gymnasiums that have been developed/revised in the period 2020 – 2022. As curricula changes were made in just four administrative units during this period (Republika Srpska, Brčko District, Sarajevo and Zenica-Doboj Canton) eight curriculum documents (5 for primary schools and 3 for gymnasiums) were included in the review process which employed content analysis i.e. curriculum content mapping method.
The results show that analysed History and Geography curriculum documents support the development of Competences for Democratic Culture/CDC, in terms of acquiring and developing disciplinary knowledge and critical understanding of the world, autonomous learning, and critical and analytical thinking skills. Values such as human dignity and human rights, justice, fairness, equality, cultural diversity, sustainability are mentioned and declaratively promoted in all analysed documents; however, they contain vague formulations without any elaboration. Evidence on developing attitudes and skills such as openness to other beliefs, world views and practices, flexibility, adaptability, empathy, cooperation or conflict resolution skills is scarce or missing.
