proMENTE Social Research was hired by Dogs Trust to make an assessment of the number of households that own dogs as pets in four Sarajevo municipalities - Stari Grad, Centar, Novo Sarajevo and Novi Grad. Multistage Cluster Sampling was used as the strategy for sampling households. In the first step, 20 out of a total of 75 local communities in Sarajevo were selected. The second step entailed creating a sample of 100 households from each of the local communities. The field work was conducted from 21 May 2013 to 30 May 2013 and from 5 June 2013 to 7 June 2013. The percentage of households in the four Sarajevo municipalities covered by this Report that own dogs is 10.75% (12992 households) with the sample error margin of 3%. This means that we can be 95% certain that the percentage of households that own a pet dog in Sarajevo is found between 7.75% (9366 households) and 13,75% (16617 households). Out of the total number of dogs, 62% are males and 38% are females, while the dominant age is 3 to 5 years. A little over 30% of the surveyed households responded that they received their pet dog as a gift from friends. It is interesting that almost 20% of dog owning households adopted their pet from the street or an animal shelter. At the time of the survey, 17% of the dogs in our sample had been spayed/neutered.
